Ber and I very quickly slipped away last week (just like our first year of marriage did!) for an anniversary trip to Slovenia. There was something so perfect and unsuspected about this trip and not a single detail disappointed–And our hotel of choice was no exception.
Grand Hotel Union, Ljubljana, Slovenia
Our bus arrived to Ljubljana in the wee hours of Monday morning, which ended up not being as inconvenient as it might sound. In fact, it felt as though for the next couple of hours we had the city entirely to ourselves. At 8 am we entered the 4 star Grand Hotel Union for the first time. We were greeted by a staff who seemed to have had a better night’s sleep than we had had. Everyone was bright-eyed and friendly.
They obliged our request to leave our luggage bag and backpack there with them until we returned later at check-in time. A convenience we took advantage of on our last day as well, leaving our bags there even after we had checked out, and until right before our overnight bus left to come back to Switzerland.
We explored the city for the next few hours (more details to come in later posts!), so we were ready for a little nap by the time check-in rolled around. Check-in went smoothly and we retrieved our bags and headed to our room.
A naturally lit, comfortable space greeted us. The fact that it wasn’t overly posh, strangely enough, made me feel like I belonged there and that I hadn’t stepped into someone else’s life. However, it was nicely decorated, sparkling clean, and someone had been attentive to leaving personalized touches to make us feel welcome.
Personalized touches – a box of chocolates, a personal note, a goody bag with sleep masks, inflateable neck pillows, and ear plugs (The earplugs were never needed, by the way, but the neck pillows were life savers on the bus back to Switzerland!)
The bathroom was spacious and also well equipped
Perfect for two lovers celebrating their marriage I’d say. 😉
As I’ve said before, 4 star hotels’ breakfast buffets turn me into a huge breakfast eater which I’m normally not. I really love it when a hotel gives a quality sampling of what is native to the area. The Slovenian sausage we ate here was nearly as good as what we ate at the most recommended sausage restaurant in the city. I ate it along side my grilled veggies, scrambled eggs, and sheep cheese. Not only delicious, but protein packed and just the fuel I needed for a full day of exploring!Breakfast at Grand Hotel Union, Ljubljana, Slovenia | Sausage, sheep cheese, and scrambled eggs Click To Tweet
The Wellness Center
The wellness center, where you can have a massage, order a drink, enjoy the sauna, swim or just chill by the pool, was probably the most impressive thing about Grand Hotel Union.
Okay, I take that back. I was pretty impressed to see a letter hanging on the wall downstairs that Bill and Hillary Clinton had stayed at the hotel too. Come to find out, so had the Queen of England. But you know, other then that, this rooftop luxury pool with a view takes the cake. The Clintons and The Queen! Just a few people who also stayed at Grand Hotel Union. Click To Tweet
You can’t find a hotel in Ljubljana in a better location. Built in 1905, the hotel itself is part of the romantic old town the tourists are walking through taking pictures of. Just look for the iconic pink church at the main square. Grand Hotel Union is directly behind it! Being in this central location makes it super easy for not only exploring Ljubljana, but also for catching buses or trains to other places to explore in Slovenia. The bus and train station are literally up the street, less than a 10 minute walk away.
At the end of the day and the end of the stay, what really matters most at any kind of accommodation, is the service. We left feeling that our needs had been tended to, and that it really had been their pleasure to host us.
We were honored to be their guests and to be able to celebrate our very first wedding anniversary in such a memorable way. We highly recommend visiting Ljubjlana, Slovenia and treating yourself to a few nights stay at the Grand Hotel Union.
