Things you need to know BEFORE HIKING MOUNT BATUR

Hiking Mount Batur is situated within the Bangli region of the Island of Bali, Indonesia. Many years ago, tourists had been hiking through Mount Batur (a volcano in Bali) to watch the sunrise over nearby volcanoes Mount Agung and Mount Agung and it’s not difficult to see why!

If you are able to rise early for the trip to the summit, you’ll be treated to an exhilarating trek in the dark, with an unforgettable sunrise at the summit. The last time I was there I went on a hike up the volcano for the first time in my life and didn’t really know what to expect.

In this article , I discuss 6 things you need to be aware of prior to hiking Mount Batur, including what is required and how to prepare.

How strenuous is the hike UP THE MOUNT BATUR VOLCANO in Bali?

In the beginning, how strenuous is the hike? Most likely, that’s the most important question that needs finding out. If you’re normally active and maintain a reasonable level of fitness, you shouldn’t think that the hike is too difficult.

You will read on most sites, travel-related channels and blogs that it’s simple and you’ll be able to speed up it! Well, that’s not entirely accurate.

The hike is about an hour (for the most part, it’s quicker if you need fewer breaks) Keep in mind that you’re climbing a mountain that is 1,717 m or 5,633 feet above sea level.

Personally, I found the walk to be difficult and not the smooth stroll as some described it. In fairness I don’t perform too much exercise and when I am at the gym it’s probably to take a relaxing Pilates class!

If you are knowing how hard the hike will be it is important to pay attention at your own fitness level, not anyone other’s. Your body is the best judge, and will be in a position to know early on if you are going to find the hike difficult.

There is no need to be training beforehand (it’s just a two-hour hike, not a marathon! ), and as long as you’re taking breaks as you require I’d say anyone can get to the top.

WHAT TO WEAR TO GO HIKING THE VOLCANO

The temperature and climate are likely to vary from one night to the following and changes during the hike. I suggest wear comfortable legshorts or shorts. These are the things that you usually wear to exercise.

The hike is about 2 hours (for the most part, faster if you need fewer breaks) Remember that you’re climbing a mountain that is at 1,717m, or 5,633 ft, higher than the sea level.

For me personally, I found the hike to be quite difficult , and not an easy walk that some have described. To be honest I don’t really do often in the gym and when I am at the gym it’s likely to be to take a relaxing Pilates class!

If you are knowing how tough the hike will be really, you must look to your own personal fitness level and not someone else’s. Your body knows what it is and are well-equipped to determine early on if you are going to find the hike challenging.

2) WHAT SHOULD I wear to hike the VOLCANO

The temperature and climate are likely to differ from night to another and is also subject to change throughout the hike. I would suggest wear comfy leggings or shorts, which is something you’d normally wear when working out.

The most essential factor to wear is sneakers or hiking shoes! I watched many ladies wearing very ridiculous and stylish boots slide off when they tried to climb the final portion of the trail where rocks and gravel are loose.

Bring a sweater or hoodie for those colder moments of the hike. It is likely to be at the beginning and at the top. Throughout the hike, you’ll likely remove these outer layers.

I also suggest bringing an rain jacket particularly if you are out hiking during the rainy season or in the vicinity because you could be drenched on!

WHAT TO BRING FOR MOUNT BATUR

Use a small rucksack to bring your waterproof gear, extra water and some snacks. I also suggest purchasing a headlamp beforehand.

A flashlight is provided from your guide, but having a small headlamp has made the hike simpler, particularly toward the end when you have hands free while climbing up the rocky path.

Your guide will likely have a couple of tiny water fountains for you to drink, but I think it’s best to have extra in your bag too. Your guide at the top will be bringing snacks, most likely some simple eggs that have been boiled.

If you are likely to be hungry you should bring biscuits, sandwiches or other snacks. We took these along with us However, we didn’t eat until after we stopped for food on our return journey in Seminyak.

CAMERA EQUIPMENT

Bringing cameras is essential! I currently use my Nikon D850 and a Sigma Art Lens However, any high-quality DSLR will allow you to take pictures of the sunrise.

The sunrise at the top of Mount Batur is truly stunning therefore make sure you bring along your cameras, Gopros, phones or whatever you prefer for photography.

If you’re not an expert, I would suggest leaving the tripod at home. While you can create a fantastic time-lapse but it’s a lot of fun on the summit and carrying it up the mountain would be an issue.

If you are really looking for the use of a tripod, then I would recommend a small, flexible tripod and not a large one. But I urge you to lay down your camera and enjoy the moment as the sun rises , after snapping several photos!
